1) 774 Oven Sample Processor
2) 774 SC Controller
3) 728 Stirrer
4) 800 Dosino 50mL
5) 831 KF Coulometer
6) 846 Dosing Interface
7) Edgeport USB Converter
8) Titration Vessel
In principle the 774 Oven Sample Processor can be used with all samples that release their water when heat is applied. However, the KF oven method is essential whenever direct volumetric or coulometric Karl Fischer titration is impossible because the sample contains interfering components or, due to its consistency, is difficult to place in the titration vessel.
The combination of the 774 Oven Sample Processor with coulometric Karl Fischer titration (756 or 831 KF Coulometer) is ideal for samples with a low water content. Foodstuffs, pharmaceutical products, plastics or mineral oil products can be analyzed fully automatically and extremely accurately. On the other hand, a volumetric Karl Fischer titration using a KF Titrino is to be
preferred for samples with a very high water content (>50%).
In accordance with the gas extraction principle the water is driven out of the heated sample by a stream of dry carrier gas and transferred to the titration vessel, where the water is determined by KF titration.
For temperature-sensitive samples, e.g. foodstuffs, the water can be released gently at lower temperatures by simultaneous extraction with methanol. In this way it is possible to prevent any water being released by decomposition.
This Application Bulletin uses examples from the food, pharmaceutical, plastics and petrochemical industries to describe automatic Karl Fischer water determination using the 774 Oven Sample Processor and a KF Coulometer.
Information concerning the combination of the Oven Sample Processor with a volumetric KF titrator is given in brackets.
The Metrohm 774 Oven Sample Processor Overview
1.1 Application range
The Metrohm 774 Oven Sample Processor is a very versatile instrument. It has been specially designed for laboratory use and can be used for a wide range of applications. It provides an essential service when large numbers of samples have to be processed in which the samples require to be heated and/or whenever it is necessary to remove moisture or organic sol-vents from solids or liquids by the application of heat.
The construction of the 774 Oven Sample Processor has been principally based on the determination of moisture by the oven method. The sample heated in the oven block releases its moisture as water vapor which is transferred to a measuring cell in a stream of gas. The moisture determina- tion in the cell can be carried out either coulometrically or volumetrically ac-cording to Karl Fischer.
This method is becoming increasingly popular wherever moisture determi-nations have to be carried out in matrices which interfere with the moisture determination process or which release their moisture only with great diffi-culty.
831 KF Coulometer incl. diaphragmless generatorelectrode
Economical KF Coulometer with diaphragmless titration cell for water determi-nation right down to trace levels. The KF Coulometer has established itself forthe determination of very small amounts of water. Thanks to its reliability, back-lit graphical display, multilingual dialog and easy operation, the 756 KF Coulom-eter has become standard equipment in many laboratories. The clear displayprovides information about the relevant titration parameters and gives anunmistakable presentation of the course of titration in the form of a curveshowing µg water against time. Recommended measuring range: 10 µg...200mg absolute water.
